Which Claude Plan Does a Dealership Need? Free vs Pro vs Max vs Team vs Enterprise

The plan question is not really about price. It is about whether your people are using AI on store data inside an account the store controls.

The short answer

One person piloting AI at a dealership needs Claude Pro ($20 per month). A person who builds tools daily should move to Max ($100 or $200 per month). Once five or more employees use Claude on store data, the store should move to a Team plan (from $20 per seat per month on annual billing) for central billing, admin controls, and single sign-on. Dealer groups with audit and data retention requirements should look at Enterprise. The Free plan is not suitable for dealership work and does not include Claude Code.

Pick by situation

  1. "I am the one person at my store figuring this out." Pro. Put it on a company card under a company email address, not your personal one.
  2. "I build something most days and keep hitting limits." Max 5x. Go to 20x only if 5x still stops you.
  3. "Five or more of us use it." Team. This is the point where individual accounts become a liability.
  4. "We are a group with a compliance officer and an IT department." Enterprise conversation. Audit logs and retention controls are the reason.

The real risk is personal accounts

The most common situation in dealerships today: a dozen employees using personal Free accounts, on personal email addresses, with store data. Nobody chose that. It just happened. The store cannot see it, cannot set rules for it, and cannot shut it off when someone leaves.

Personal accounts
  • Store has no visibility
  • Work leaves when the employee leaves
  • No control over connectors or sharing
  • No single place to set policy
  • Expense reports full of $20 charges
A Team plan
  • One bill, one admin
  • Remove a user and their access ends
  • Admins control which connectors are allowed
  • Shared Projects hold the store's knowledge files
  • SSO ties access to your company login

Example math using October 2026 Team pricing on annual billing. Most users do not need premium seats. Give those to the two people who build.

How usage limits work

Anthropic does not publish a fixed message count. Paid plans have a usage allowance that resets on a rolling window of a few hours, plus a weekly ceiling. Chat and Claude Code all draw from the same allowance. Long conversations, large files, and the most capable models use it faster. If one person hits limits regularly, move that person up a tier. Do not move everyone.

What about the API?

The API is pay-as-you-go access for software developers building Claude into their own products. A store does not need it to use anything on this site. You would meet the API only if you build a customer-facing application, which is an advanced project.

Common questions

How much does Claude cost for a car dealership?

As of October 2026: Pro is $20 per user per month. Max is $100 or $200 per month. Team is $20 per standard seat per month on annual billing, or $25 monthly, with premium seats at $100 annual or $125 monthly. Enterprise is a per-seat fee plus usage. A 12-person store on Team with two premium seats runs about $400 per month on annual billing. Confirm current pricing at claude.com/pricing.

Is the free version of Claude enough for a dealership?

No. The Free plan has limited usage, does not include Claude Code, and gives the store no admin control. It is fine for a first look and not suitable for work involving store data.

What Claude plan do I need for the Claude for Dealers workshop?

Claude Pro or higher. Free accounts are not sufficient for the builds. Attendees also need the Claude desktop app and Claude Code installed before arriving.

When should a dealership move from Pro to Team?

At about five users, or sooner if employees are using personal accounts with store data. Team gives you central billing, the ability to remove access when someone leaves, admin control over connectors, and shared Projects.

Is Claude Max worth it for a dealer?

Only for the person who builds most days and regularly hits Pro limits. For a manager who uses Claude a few times a day, Pro is enough.

Does Anthropic train on our dealership data?

Data handling differs between consumer and business plans and the policy changes over time. Read Anthropic's current privacy and commercial terms rather than relying on a summary, and have your compliance counsel review them. Whatever the plan, keep credit, identity, and payment data out.
