Claude Cowork for Dealerships: Now Part of Claude, Here Is How to Hand Off Multi-Step Work
Anthropic retired the Cowork name in September 2026 and built the capability into Claude itself. The handoff works the same way: you describe the finished result, point Claude at a folder, and come back to the work done.
Folder: /MonthEnd/August. Build the manager meeting pack: one summary page per department from these exports, then a 6 slide deck. Flag anything that does not tie out.
Working
- Done Read 7 files (sales log, service summary, parts, ad spend, 3 vendor reports)
- Done Department summaries written to /MonthEnd/August/Pack
- Done Deck drafted, 6 slides
- Check Ad spend report shows 412 leads. CRM export shows 388. Difference noted on slide 4.
Claude Cowork was Anthropic's name for handing Claude a multi-step task instead of a single question. As of September 2026 that capability is built into Claude itself, rolling out to Pro and Max first with other plans to follow, and the Cowork name is retired. It works inside the folders and apps you allow, produces finished files (documents, spreadsheets, decks), and reports back. Dealership managers use it for month-end report packs, vendor invoice rollups, meeting prep, and list cleanup.
- Cowork name retired September 2026. The capability now lives in Claude
- Works in the Claude desktop app, on the web, and on mobile
- Rolling out to Pro and Max first, other plans to follow
- You choose which folders it can touch
- Best first task: the month-end manager pack
- Always point it at copies, not originals
A question vs a handoff vs a build
| Claude chat | Claude, handed a task | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|---|
| You give it | A question or a draft | A task and a folder | A tool idea and a folder |
| You get back | An answer | Finished files | Working software |
| Built for | Everyone | Managers and knowledge workers | Builders |
| Dealer example | Rewrite this email to a customer | Build the month-end pack from these 7 exports | Build a dashboard that updates from this export |
If you have been pasting five files into chat one at a time and stitching the answers together yourself, that is the signal to hand Claude the whole job instead. For the builder's tool, see Claude Code for Car Dealers.
Six dealership tasks to hand off
- Month-end manager pack. Exports from sales, service, parts, and marketing become one summary page per department and a short deck. The biggest time saver for a GM or controller.
- Vendor invoice rollup. A folder of PDF invoices becomes one spreadsheet: vendor, amount, service period, contract end date if shown. This is the starting point for a build vs buy review.
- Vendor report comparison. Three vendors report leads three different ways. Claude lines them up against your CRM count and lists the gaps.
- List cleanup. Merge a sold list, a service list, and an event list. Dedupe, fix formatting, flag bad emails.
- Meeting prep. Before a 20 group or an OEM contact visit, assemble the last three months of the relevant numbers and a one-page brief.
- Policy and handbook updates. Apply a list of changes across a folder of documents and produce a change log.
How to brief the handoff
A bad brief gets a bad pack. Treat it like handing work to a sharp new hire who has never seen your store.
- 01OutcomeWhat finished looks like, in one sentence
- 02InputsWhich folder, which files, what each one is
- 03RulesDefinitions, format, what to flag
- 04BoundariesWhat not to touch, where to save
- 05ReviewYou read it before anyone else does
OUTCOME: A manager meeting pack for August. One summary page per department plus a 6 slide deck. INPUTS: Everything in /MonthEnd/August. File names say what they are. RULES: A "lead" is a unique customer in the CRM export, not a vendor's count. Compare to July where July data exists. Flag any number that does not match between two files. BOUNDARIES: Do not edit the source files. Save everything to /MonthEnd/August/Pack. FORMAT: Plain language. Numbers first. No adjectives.
Folder rules that keep it safe
- One working folder per task
- Copies of exports, never the originals
- Customer PII removed when the task does not need it
- A Pack or Output subfolder for results
- A person named as reviewer
- Access to your whole drive
- Deal jackets, credit apps, or HR files in scope
- Letting it email or post on your behalf without review
- Skipping the tie-out check
- Treating the first draft as final
The broader policy for the store is in AI Guardrails for Dealerships.
Handoffs with connectors
A handoff gets more useful when Claude can reach the tools you already use, such as email, calendar, and shared drives, through connectors. That is its own topic: Claude Connectors and MCP for Dealerships. Start with local folders. Add connectors once you trust the results.
Common questions
What is Claude Cowork, and does it still exist?
Claude Cowork was Anthropic's name for delegating multi-step knowledge work to Claude: you describe a task, grant access to specific folders or apps, and Claude does the work and produces finished files. In September 2026 Anthropic folded Cowork into Claude and retired the name. The capability is the same. It is now just how Claude works.
Is Claude Cowork free, and which plans have it?
There is no separate charge. As of October 2026, Anthropic's pricing page says the capability formerly called Cowork is rolling out to Pro and Max subscribers first, with more plans to follow. Confirm the current rollout at claude.com/pricing.
Can Claude access my DMS or CRM when I hand it a task?
Only through files you export or connectors you set up. Out of the box it works with the folders you grant. For live connections, ask your vendor whether they offer an MCP server and read our connectors guide.
How is a handoff different from just uploading files to chat?
A single question gets a single answer and you do the stitching. A handoff plans the whole job, works through many files, saves real output files to your folder, and reports what it found, including numbers that do not match.
What do attendees need installed for the Claude for Dealers workshop?
A Claude Pro account or higher, the Claude desktop app, and Claude Code installed before arriving. Free accounts are not sufficient for the builds.
